Historically, a PhD has been the highest-level nursing degree, but most PhD nursing programs have focused primarily on teaching and research. After several studies, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (“AACN”) concluded that there should be a commensurate degree focused on the practice of nursing. To achieve this, the AACN has recommended that all advanced nurse practitioner educational programs be converted from masters level to doctorate level degrees by 2015. As a result, the DNP degree will become very important in the field of nursing in the coming years.
